Kyoto Meets India: A Fusion Biryani Experience at INDIA GATE

There’s a place in Kyoto where you can enjoy a wonderful biryani — a fragrant Indian rice dish cooked with spices, meat, and herbs — that blends the rich flavors of Indian cuisine with the delicate taste of Japanese washoku. I visited that restaurant, INDIA GATE.

Heading to INDIA GATE in Karasuma

After enjoying Ando’s world at the Garden of Fine Art Kyoto, we headed back to the Karasuma area for lunch. Our destination: INDIA GATE.

A biryani house tucked away in a small alley — my expectations were high.

There’s a common problem with curry shops — you forget what’s on the menu unless you take a picture of the blackboard. Fortunately, we did take one.

I ordered a combination of firefly squid biryani and sea bream soup biryani, topped with a spiced egg and yam achar!

Both biryanis had a gentle, well-balanced flavor. Everything, including the side dishes, was absolutely delicious — the best!

This biryani is quite different from the ones you find at typical Indian restaurants — it’s full of a distinct Kyoto-style flavor. I’d love to come back again.
