To the Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art

Today’s main destination: Andy Warhol Kyoto

This was my second visit to the Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art, this time for the special exhibition Andy Warhol Kyoto. It looks cool no matter how many times I see it. Wooden architecture tends to get all the attention as something uniquely “Japanese,” but this kind of Imperial Crown Style is Japanese too, I think.

I walked over to the old entrance, which is no longer in use, and found that the ceiling had been opened up with glass so natural light could pour in.

Andy Warhol Kyoto is being held in the Higashiyama Cube, a new wing added during the renovation. It’s a gleaming exhibition space built for contemporary art.

The show was packed with works, from pieces I was seeing for the first time to ones that made me go, “Oh, I know this!” so I really enjoyed it.

I also came face to face with the Brillo Boxes that Shimane Prefecture, located on the Sea of Japan side of western Japan, bought as a set of five for 300 million yen. Apparently there was even some talk along the lines of, “Why couldn’t just one have been enough?” which made me laugh.
