Kyoto Sightseeing, Final Push
Enjoying Kyoto’s Postmodern Architecture
I walked back to pick up the luggage I’d left at the hotel. Kyoto is actually full of postmodern buildings right in the middle of the city. In a way, that too feels quintessentially Japanese. People should talk about it more!
Right by Karasuma Oike Station is this building called the Oike Koto Building. It was apparently originally the headquarters of an apparel company called ItalIyardo, and it’s a magnificent example of postmodernism…
The arch at the top and the columns running through the building are impressive enough on their own, but the huge object—or relief?—on the lower floors is wonderful.
With all that on my mind, I headed toward Kyoto Station. My final stop was Kyoto Tower, using the ticket that came with Heian Jingu Yorumoude.
From here, you can look out over many of Kyoto’s temples and shrines, but what I really got to take in was the Kyoto Station Building from above—a structure that might well be called the king of postmodern architecture. It’s amazing from below, and it’s amazing from above too.
