Right in Front of the Hotel: Nijo Castle
Walking Through a Vast Castle
It was my Kyoto trip. I sent my luggage from HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO to Kyoto Station, and then started sightseeing.
Since I was staying right in front of Nijo Castle, I figured I had to visit it. And besides, I could pick up one of the Top 100 Japanese Castles stamps I’ve been quietly collecting!
It had been about 20 years since my last visit to Nijo Castle, back on my junior high school graduation trip. This is Ninomaru Palace.
Back then, I was taught that the "nightingale floors," which chirp when you walk on them, were a security measure. But apparently that’s not actually the case—they just make that sound because of age-related wear and tear. I have to admit, that was a little disappointing, haha.
Not only the interiors but the gardens were magnificent as well. The audio guide was very good too—unlike the one at Byodoin Phoenix Hall—so I’d definitely recommend it.
Even though it was only May, the clear weather made it feel like summer already. It was hot…
This is Ninomaru Garden, located in front of Ninomaru Palace. It has been designated a Special Place of Scenic Beauty.
It’s so spacious that it’s enjoyable from different angles.
Honmaru Palace was under construction, so I couldn’t see it at all. I also couldn’t even get close to Seiryuen because a tea gathering was being held there, haha.
That was my cue to leave Nijo Castle. I said goodbye after taking one last look at the Southeast Corner Tower from outside.
