Nijo Castle
Walking Through the Expansive Castle
It’s finally the last day of my Kyoto trip. I began sightseeing.

Since I was staying right in front of Nijo Castle, I had to visit it! I could also get the ‘Hundred Famous Castles’ stamp I’ve been quietly collecting.

This was my first visit to Nijo Castle in about 20 years, since the school trip in my third year of junior high. This is the Ninomaru Palace.
Back then we were taught that the ‘uguisubari’—the squeaking floors that sound when you walk—were for security, but it turns out that’s not true; they’re apparently just due to age-related wear, which was a little disappointing (lol).

Not only are the interiors impressive, but the gardens are too. The audio guide was very good (unlike the one at Byodo-in Phoenix Hall), so I recommend it.

Even though it was May, with the clear weather it already felt like summer. It was hot…

This is the Ninomaru Garden in front of the Ninomaru Palace. It is designated a Special Place of Scenic Beauty.

It’s expansive and enjoyable from different viewpoints.

The Honmaru Palace was under renovation, so we couldn’t see it at all. Seiryuen was holding a tea ceremony, so we couldn’t get close to it either (lol).
I left Nijo Castle. From outside I looked at the southeast corner turret and said goodbye to the castle.
