Enjoying Matsumoto City: Beyond the Castle

Matsumoto Performing Arts Centre, Beautifully Lit

The last stop on my leisurely walk around Matsumoto was the Matsumoto Performing Arts Centre. This building, too, was designed by Toyo Ito.

Its exterior curves dramatically, patterned with random motifs that let the light spill out from inside.

Even the slim columns at the drop-off area are lovely.

Inside the lobby, there’s a grand staircase covered in red carpet. The walls are patterned with the same random motif, and I imagine the light must pour in when it’s bright outside.

Seen from above, it has the kind of atmosphere you’d expect in a stylish film.

The second floor is spacious too, and it feels like a wonderful place to be. I’d love to see a musical somewhere like this.

The rooftop is an observation plaza, and you can enter it freely as well. It was pitch-dark at night, so I’d like to come back again someday in the daytime.
