Biryani for lunch
Heading to INDIA GATE in Karasuma
After enjoying Ando’s world at the Garden of Fine Arts Kyoto, we headed back toward Karasuma for lunch. Our destination was INDIA GATE.
It’s a standalone biryani restaurant tucked a little way down a side street. My expectations were high.
A classic curry-shop problem: if I don’t take a photo of the blackboard, I forget the menu. I made sure to get a shot.
We ordered a half-and-half plate of firefly squid biryani and sea bream dashi biryani, then added spiced egg and nagaimo achar as toppings.
Both the firefly squid and the sea bream dashi versions had a gentle flavor, perhaps because of the seafood. The side dishes were piled on generously, and every one of them was delicious. It was fantastic.
This was biryani with a distinctly Kyoto character, quite different from what you get at an Indian restaurant. I’d love to come back.
