Back to Yuuki Gion at Night
For dinner, I returned to Yuuki, a brewery-run izakaya in Gion. Various things got in the way last time I was in Kyoto, so I was thrilled to finally make this long-awaited return.
The menu was handwritten, which I love!
Orders, though, were placed by mobile order on a smartphone. It was easy and convenient.
If I remember right, the otoshi was nanbanzuke.
Nama-fu, grilled fish marinated in Saikyo miso, lotus root, and tara no me. Everything was delicious.
The sake was arranged in nine levels according to rice polishing ratio. Whenever I see something like that, it makes me want to try both ends of the spectrum…
This time, I decided to try the "Red," made from brown rice!!
The moment it hit my palate, there was an unexpected acidity completely unlike regular sake. But with the food, that tartness settled in and became really enjoyable. If you like trying unusual things, this is definitely a drink worth ordering.
We kept ordering more food too: ebi-imo, Shogoin turnip, pressed mackerel sushi, and ankimo.
What a meal. I walked back to sober up a bit and get some exercise. It was such a warm day that even in February, it felt perfect for an evening stroll.
