Starts at Sanjusangendo
Morning at Sanjusangendo, Right in Front of the Hotel
After checking out of Hyatt Regency Kyoto, I kicked off sightseeing. My first stop was Sanjusangendo, right next to the hotel.
It had been about 20 years since my last visit to Sanjusangendo, back on my junior high school graduation trip. The hall is about 120 meters long, and because it has 33 spaces between its columns, it came to be called “Sanjusangendo.”
Inside, 1,000 standing Kannon statues are enshrined, and the sight is as overwhelming as ever. I couldn’t help thinking how much time and labor it must have taken to create so many… (Photography is not allowed inside.)
Sanjusangendo is one of Kyoto’s classic must-see sights, so I moved through it quickly before the crowds started to build. On to the next stop.
