Tenjin IMS: A Bubble-Era Landmark in Fukuoka

Arriving in Hakata: First the Hotel, Then Sightseeing…

The first place we headed to was

Tenjin IMS

. I’d wanted to visit this fashion building ever since I caught a brief glimpse of it on TV. The reason was its lavish interior, packed with that unmistakable bubble-era feel. The exterior sparkled, with motifs that looked like a Greek temple. Given when it was built,

postmodern

might be a fair way to describe some of its elements, I think.

Once I stepped inside, it was every bit as gorgeous as I’d hoped. A see-through escalator, a grand atrium—this is exactly why I love bubble-era architecture!!

If you’re in Hakata, this bubble-era atmosphere is absolutely worth seeing at least once. There were also plenty of other buildings around Tenjin IMS that looked seriously expensive—like the Best Denki building with those dramatic cuts in it, for example.

Or the building with the pointed roof on top.
