Enjoying a Local Izakaya
Minna no Ie, a Renovated Traditional Townhouse
Since I couldn’t exactly eat Omi beef two nights in a row, I stopped by the izakaya Minna no Ie the following evening.

This place was also close to where I was staying, so the easy access was a real plus.
Omihachiman doesn’t have many large hotels, but I felt part of the appeal was staying in a hostel or a renovated machiya-style inn and being able to enjoy the town on foot.
The place was full and had a lively atmosphere. I started with stewed red konjac and Omi beef tendon, made with Shiga’s local specialty, red konjac.

I also loved the agedashi tofu, which was made with house-made sesame tofu—it was delicious too!

Authentic Charcoal-Grilled Dishes
One of this restaurant’s specialties is authentic charcoal-grilled dishes. The fluffy tsukune had a lovely kick of sansho pepper and was delicious.

The liver was grilled just right as well.

What left the biggest impression on me, though, was the Eigenji maitake.

It had such a rich flavor and was absolutely delicious—I wanted to buy some to take home, but by the time I went to the local agricultural co-op the next day, it was already sold out… I’ll have to remember that: Eigenji maitake.
