When you think of Omihachiman, you think of beef!
Heading to Marutake Omi Nishikawa
When people think of Omi, the image that probably comes to mind first is Omi beef. It’s one of Japan’s three great wagyu brands and is said to have an especially long history among wagyu varieties—more than 400 years, in fact.
Since I was in Omi, I felt I had to try it at least once. So for my first dinner, I decided to have sukiyaki at Marutake Omi Nishikawa.

It was just a short walk from the Omihachiman Machiya Club, where I was staying.
Served as an individual set, like at a traditional Japanese inn
The restaurant was attached to a butcher shop. The sukiyaki was served as an individual hot pot set, much like you’d get at a traditional Japanese inn.

Since the two of us ordered the same thing, I couldn’t help wishing we could have had it in one large sukiyaki pot instead of separate individual pots.
The beautifully presented meat was, of course, Omi beef.

In addition to the meat, there was also the local specialty red konnyaku,

as well as items like lightly seared beef tataki.

The meat itself was unquestionably delicious, but there was so much of it that I felt uncomfortably full afterward… haha.
An ideal portion for me would probably have been about 75% of this amount, or instead of getting two plates of the same meat for the two of us, it might have been better if one of us had chosen a lower grade.
