Walking Around Nara Without a Car

Kasuga Taisha Shrine

After spending time with the deer, I headed to Kasuga Taisha Shrine. It is a shrine that has stood since the days of Heijo-kyo.

The purification fountain has a deer-themed design. Apparently, water used to come out from the scroll held in the deer’s mouth as well. Now it’s the COVID-era version (maybe?), with water trickling out from a pipe below.

There are deer here too, though not as many as in the grassy area of Nara Park. Seeing deer inside the shrine grounds feels almost mystical.

It really was true that Nara’s deer have learned to bow. This deer did it too—yes, a proper bow. The speed of the bow was incredibly fast, haha.

A view of the many hanging lanterns at Kasuga Taisha Shrine. Preparations for the New Year were underway throughout the shrine grounds.

From here, I walked on to the next destination.
