A Quick 2-Day, 1-Night Trip to Kobe

Starting Kobe with European-Style Curry

I arrived at Shin-Kobe from Tokyo by shinkansen, then headed first to Sannomiya. Shin-Kobe sits at the foot of the mountains, and maybe because there’s a river flowing nearby, it felt a little cooler. I took the subway to Sannomiya.

My first stop was Sun Center Plaza, where I was making a beeline for the curry shop SAVOY. Sun Center Plaza is a huge commercial building connected to the shopping arcade, and SAVOY is in the basement of the Center Plaza section within Sun Center Plaza. (A little confusing, haha.)

I got lucky and went in without having to wait in line! The long, narrow interior is counter seating only, and the only thing on the menu is curry.

On the counter were fukujinzuke, rakkyo, pickles, and more, and you’re free to help yourself. The salad that came with the meal was cabbage with a fairly tangy dressing.

And before long, the curry arrived!

Curry at SAVOY

It was the kind of curry where most of the ingredients have probably melted into the sauce, and it was spicier than I expected—I actually started sweating. There’s a raw egg available as a topping, which might be nice if you want to mellow it out. Thanks for the meal.
