A Walk Around Kokura Castle
Riverwalk Kitakyushu
At last, I headed into Riverwalk Kitakyushu. It was designed by the American architect Jon Jerde.
He has worked on many commercial complexes in Japan as well, and is known for projects such as Canal City Hakata, the low-rise section of Roppongi Hills, Namba Parks, La Cittadella in Kawasaki, and Caretta Shiodome.
Like Canal City, one of its distinctive features is its plaza-like open spaces.
The plaza with a waterfall-like fountain flowing down from above was under maintenance at the time.
The exterior is also highly distinctive, and I felt that the coexistence of this building with the castle keep in the surrounding townscape created a unique view that you do not often see elsewhere.
