Dinner is Japanese!

A Wonderful Time at Japanese Cuisine Kawanami

For dinner on the first day, we headed to Japanese Cuisine Kawanami near Shin-Omiya Station. The restaurant is run by a husband-and-wife team, and they grow their own vegetables in a field, so we could enjoy freshly harvested produce here—I had high hopes!

Since I’d already had my first beer back in the hotel room (haha), I started straight away with sake. They offered two candidates that would pair well with the dishes being served, and I got to taste both before choosing. So much fun!

And the presentation of the sake vessels was just incredible!! This is what it means to enjoy something with your eyes as well.

The dishes themselves were also beautifully arranged. This one was styled like a ferry boat.

When I lifted the lid, there was the dish waiting inside!! And since it came with shuto, starting with sake from the very first glass felt like a total win.

The simmered daikon dish was richly seasoned and absolutely delicious. I even drank every last drop of the broth (haha).

Each time the sake came out, it was presented with completely different decorations. Amazing…

Then came the grilled fish—and the plate it was served on was lovely too…

Next was the sashimi. And the vegetables weren’t just there as garnish—they were delicious too.

Then the duck hot pot. This was packed with vegetables as well, and I happily dug in. Delicious.

To finish, we had rice cooked in an earthenware pot. It was full of mushrooms and full of umami. (I went back for seconds.)

Thank you for the meal—this was a deeply satisfying dinner. With so many vegetables, it felt just right on the stomach too.
