Lunch is Hakata udon
Heading to Maki no Udon Onojo Branch
After leaving Dazaifu behind, we finally set off for Saga. For lunch, we decided to stop for Maki no Udon along the way.

Luckily, there were open seats and we were able to sit down right away, but a long line formed soon after, which really drove home just how popular it is in Fukuoka.
Sweet and Rich: Niku Gobou Udon
Out of the many menu options, I went with the Niku Gobou Udon, which is said to be their signature dish, topped with simmered beef and burdock root tempura.

What surprised me most was how sweet the broth was.
I already knew the noodles were supposed to be soft, but I was still shocked by how quickly they soaked up the broth. I enjoyed it while adding the extra broth from the table a few times.
The burdock root tempura was also different from what I expected—the batter was about three times thicker than I had imagined, haha. Since I was there, I also had a side of kayaku gohan, a seasoned mixed rice. I was completely full.

I’m glad I was able to make it to both the temporary main hall at Dazaifu Tenmangu, which I’d wanted to see for a long time, and Maki no Udon.
