A Different Side of Itsukushima Shrine Without the Crowds

Itsukushima Shrine at Night

The biggest advantage of staying overnight on Miyajima is being able to visit Itsukushima Shrine at night or early in the morning, when there are fewer people around. Since the shrine is illuminated only during set hours at night, I decided to go as close to high tide as possible.

The approach to the shrine, which had been so crowded during the day that it was hard to walk, had turned into a quiet, empty space.

And the Great Torii, lit up at night, was incredibly beautiful.

Since I couldn’t go inside the shrine, I admired it from a distance.

Itsukushima Shrine in the Morning

Since I was staying overnight anyway, I decided to visit Itsukushima Shrine again in the morning.

When I got there, there were more people than I had expected, and it was already fairly lively.

Because it was low tide in the morning, I was able to walk all the way near the Great Torii.

Even at low tide, the ground was quite muddy, so I’d recommend wearing shoes you don’t mind getting dirty.

There were already quite a lot of people inside the shrine as well.

Since there is an admission fee to enter the shrine and I had already gone in the day before, I decided not to go in this time.
